The Krewe de Les Cajuns was founded in 1990 by 7 couples that were members of the Cajun French Music Association- Lake Charles Chapter. Promoting and preserving the “old-time” Cajun Mardi Gras was the purpose for which it was formed. The original members have worked hard to build the Krewe. Our krewe has been a part of Mardi Gras of SWLA since its founding. One of the events that Krewe was an integral part of was the Children’s Day event. We would bring our members in costume, one of our bands to play music, and some Mardi Gras trinkets to hand to the children. You could even find us giving a dance lesson or two. We traditionally hold an annual ball with a live band. Originally, our ball was held at the VFW on Country Club. After the VFW was relocated, we began to hold them at the CFMA-LC building on East Prien Lake Road. We present our royalty, consisting of a king, queen, duchess, and duke. In addition, we hold a children’s and adults’ costume contest. In the late ’90s, the Krewe had enough members and enough funds to purchase a trailer and build a float. That float has rolled in the Krewe of Krewes parade in Lake Charles every year since, with the exception of two years. We always “passe’ a la bon ton” on our float on Mardi Gras day. The krewe also participates in the 12th-night event, and the “Lundi Gras” event called the Royal Gala. This is an event where all the current royalty is presented to the public.
